Bowman, Black & DeFilio, LLC (formerly known as Bowman, Monaco & Black, PC) is one of the leading firms in and throughout the area. By combining our expertise, experience and the team mentality of our staff, we assure that every client receives the close analysis and attention they deserve. Our dedication to high standards, hiring of seasoned tax professionals, and work ethic is the reason our client base returns year after year.

Our Team

James E. Bowman, CPA

James E. Bowman, CPA cofounded the firm in 1991.

Jim has provided accounting, auditing, consulting and tax services to privately held companies in the manufacturing, construction, retail, distribution, not-for-profit and agriculture industries. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Northeastern University in 1985, Jim started his career with Arthur Andersen & Co in the Small Business Division in Boston. He also worked for a regional firm in Hamden, CT.

Jim has served on the Board of Directors of the Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden, Cheshire Youth Baseball, the Tommy Fund at Yale New Haven Hospital and the John J. Nerden Camp in Meriden, CT. He has also served on the Pastorial Council for the Archdiose of Hartford. He was a coach in Cheshire Youth Baseball and Cheshire Junior Football. He is also an active advisory board member to several privately held manufacturing companies in Connecticut. He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

He enjoys playing golf, boating and fishing on Long Island Sound and hanging out on Nauset Beach on Cape Cod.

Jim resides in Cheshire with his wife Michelle. He has two children Jeff and Nicole.

Harry J. Black, CPA

Harry merged with Bowman & Monaco in December 1996. Prior to that he was a partner in a mid-sized local CT accounting firm before starting his own practice in 1994. Over the course of his career Harry has provided accounting, auditing, consulting and tax services to a variety of privately held companies and associations. His clients have been involved in many industries/sectors including manufacturing, service, professional, retail, distribution and medical. His clients’ locations range from New England through Maryland.

Harry received his Bachelor’s degree in accounting from Quinnipiac College (University) in 1981. Prior to entering public accounting he worked for three years at a local import/export company in Cheshire, CT.

Harry has served on the Board of Directors of the Farms Country Club in Wallingford, CT for eight years. He is also a member of the Smaller Manufacturer’s Association of CT and has been a member of various local area Chambers of Commerce. Additionally Harry has served on many committee’s at the First Congregational Church of Cheshire. In the past Harry coached youth basketball and soccer in the town of Cheshire.

He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in Connecticut.

He enjoys playing golf, travelling throughout the world and spending time with family.

Harry currently resides in Cheshire with his wife Charlene. He has two grown children Jessica and Ryan.

Robert A. DeFilio, CPA

Robert A. DeFilio, CPA has been with the firm since 1994.

Rob has provided accounting, auditing, consulting and tax services to privately held companies in the restaurant, construction, manufacturing, retail, not-for-profit and agriculture industries. After receiving his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting from Hofstra University in 1991, Rob started his career with a small local firm Connecticut.

Rob has served on the Board of Directors of the Central Connecticut Youth Hockey Program in Newington. He is a coach hockey. He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in Connecticut.

He enjoys playing ice hockey, golf, skiing and coaching his children.

Rob currently resides in Southington with his wife Kristy.

Robert L. Monaco, CPA

Robert L Monaco, CPA cofounded the firm in 1991.

Bob has provided accounting, auditing, consulting and tax services to privately held companies in the manufacturing, construction, retail, distribution, not-for-profit and agriculture industries. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from University of New Haven in 1970, Bob started his career with US Army. After serving six months active duty in the Army he went to work for the US Treasury Internal Revenue Service working in New Haven, Stamford and New York City. In 1978 Bob went to work for several regional CPA firms in CT.

Bob has served on the Board of Directors and as an officer of the Cheshire Rotary Club. He is also an active advisory board member to several privately held manufacturing companies in Connecticut. He has taught various introductory to Taxation Classes at Quinnipiac University and graduate income tax courses at the University of Hartford Masters in Taxation program. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants where he served on numerous technical tax committees. He is licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in Connecticut.

When he is not working he enjoys jamming on his collection of guitars.
